2. Richard Wyche (Gentleman of London) 2 (Richard (of Davenham Hall)1) was born about 1554 and died on 21 Nov 1621 in England about age 67.
A descendant of a former Lord Mayor of London in the fifteenth century, Richard Wyche followed family tradition and became involved in lucrative trading with the East Indies as a merchant. He married well, the daughter of Sir Richard Saltonstall, another wealthy London merchant. Wyche's fortune would have been around £100,000 at prevailing prices, or £3.6bn today.
His son, Sir Peter Wyche (d 1643), took his fortune to the court of Charles I. In 1626, he was knighted by the king and two years later made a gentleman of the privy chamber. Appointed English ambassador to Constantinople, Wyche junior secured a reduction of duty on English cloth. His wife astonished the Sultana by making a visit to the Sultan's harem. In 1641, Wyche returned to London, and promptly lent a large sum of money to the king, which hit the family fortune. But Wyche did not live to see the outcome of the Civil War, dying at Oxford in December 1643.
